Convergys Corporation had announced it was going to add 300 jobs somewhere in the world and last week, announced that somewhere would be Tucson. Meanwhile, at another call center, Geico said it was looking to expand by hiring 80 more people.

The convergys expansion, which will include both full-time and part-time employees is the result of more work being done by the Tucson division, which currently has about 650 employees working at its facility at 3760 N. Commerce Drive.

The additional work will be providing technical support for a client in the TV and Internet entertainment industry, according to Convergys’ announcement.

The new jobs start at $10 per hour plus benefits, which start immediately.

Amy Williams, spokesman for Convergys, said the company had multiple sites from which to choose and selected Tucson for a numbe of reasons. Chief among them, she said, is the high quality and dedication of the workforce in Tucson. the fact that it is geographically located in the western United States and the availability to expand at the Tucson site.

“Expanding business at the Convergys site in Tucson has enabled us to provide a new employment opportunity for area job seekers,” said Dan McKelvy, site leader for the Convergys contact center in Tucson. “Employees also will gain experience in the customer service industry which, thanks to a renewed focus on providing quality customer support, is expected to be one of the most important industries in the next decade.”

Convergys recently closed a site in Albuquerque where it had 300 employees. Williams said the two sites serve programs for different clients and there was no connection between the Tucson job gains and the Albuquerque closure.

At Geico, the new positions will be in sales, service and claims. The company currently has about 900 employees at its Tucson operation, 930 N. Finance Center Drive.
